  2.  #41-53 All are to take to themselves what Christ says in his
  3.  word, and to inquire concerning it. No one is left so ignorant
  4.  as not to know many things to be wrong which he does, and many
  5.  things to be right which he neglects; therefore all are without
  6.  excuse in their sin. The bringing in the gospel dispensation
  7.  would occasion desolations. Not that this would be the tendency
  8.  of Christ's religion, which is pure, peaceable, and loving; but
  9.  the effect of its being contrary to men's pride and lusts. There
  10.  was to be a wide publication of the gospel. But before that took
  11.  place, Christ had a baptism to be baptized with, far different
  12.  from that of water and the Holy Spirit. He must endure
  13.  sufferings and death. It agreed not with his plan to preach the
  14.  gospel more widely, till this baptism was completed. We should
  15.  be zealous in making known the truth, for though divisions will
  16.  be stirred up, and a man's own household may be his foes, yet
  17.  sinners will be converted, and God will be glorified.

  20.  #54-59 Christ would have the people to be as wise in the
  21.  concerns of their souls as they are in outward affairs. Let them
  22.  hasten to obtain peace with God before it is too late. If any
  23.  man has found that God has set himself against him concerning
  24.  his sins, let him apply to him as God in Christ reconciling the
  25.  world to himself. While we are alive, we are in the way, and now
  26.  is our time.

  28.  * Christ exhorts to repentance from the case of the Galilaeans
  29.  and others. (1-5) Parable of the barren fig-tree. (6-9) The
  30.  infirm woman strengthened. (10-17) The parables of the mustard
  31.  seed, and leaven. (18-22) Exhortation to enter at the strait
  32.  gate. (23-30) Christ's reproof to Herod, and to the people of
  33.  Jerusalem. (31-35)

  35.  #1-5 Mention was made to Christ of the death of some Galilaeans.
  36.  This tragical story is briefly related here, and is not met with
  37.  in any historians. In Christ's reply he spoke of another event,
  38.  which, like it, gave an instance of people taken away by sudden
  39.  death. Towers, that are built for safety, often prove to be
  40.  men's destruction. He cautioned his hearers not to blame great
  41.  sufferers, as if they were therefore to be accounted great
  42.  sinners. As no place or employment can secure from the stroke of
  43.  death, we should consider the sudden removals of others as
  44.  warnings to ourselves. On these accounts Christ founded a call
  45.  to repentance. The same Jesus that bids us repent, for the
  46.  kingdom of heaven is at hand, bids us repent, for otherwise we
  47.  shall perish.

  50.  #6-9 This parable of the barren fig-tree is intended to enforce
  51.  the warning given just before: the barren tree, except it brings
  52.  forth fruit, will be cut down. This parable in the first place
  53.  refers to the nation and people of the Jews. Yet it is, without
  54.  doubt, for awakening all that enjoy the means of grace, and the
  55.  privileges of the visible church. When God has borne long, we
  56.  may hope that he will bear with us yet a little longer, but we
  57.  cannot expect that he will bear always.

  60.  #10-17 Our Lord Jesus attended upon public worship on the
  61.  sabbaths. Even bodily infirmities, unless very grievous, should
  62.  not keep us from public worship on sabbath days. This woman came
  63.  to Christ to be taught, and to get good to her soul, and then he
  64.  relieved her bodily infirmity. This cure represents the work of
  65.  Christ's grace upon the soul. And when crooked souls are made
  66.  straight, they will show it by glorifying God. Christ knew that
  67.  this ruler had a real enmity to him and to his gospel, and that
  68.  he did but cloak it with a pretended zeal for the sabbath day;
  69.  he really would not have them be healed any day; but if Jesus
  70.  speaks the word, and puts forth his healing power, sinners are
  71.  set free. This deliverance is often wrought on the Lord's day;
  72.  and whatever labour tends to put men in the way of receiving the
  73.  blessing, agrees with the design of that day.

  76.  #18-22 Here is the progress of the gospel foretold in two
  77.  parables, as in #Mt 13|. The kingdom of the Messiah is the
  78.  kingdom of God. May grace grow in our hearts; may our faith and
  79.  love grow exceedingly, so as to give undoubted evidence of their
  80.  reality. May the example of God's saints be blessed to those
  81.  among whom they live; and may his grace flow from heart to
  82.  heart, until the little one becomes a thousand.

  85.  #23-30 Our Saviour came to guide men's consciences, not to
  86.  gratify their curiosity. Ask not, How many shall be saved? But,
  87.  Shall I be one of them? Not, What shall become of such and such?
  88.  But, What shall I do, and what will become of me? Strive to
  89.  enter in at the strait gate. This is directed to each of us; it
  90.  is, Strive ye. All that will be saved, must enter in at the
  91.  strait gate, must undergo a change of the whole man. Those that
  92.  would enter in, must strive to enter. Here are awakening
  93.  considerations, to enforce this exhortation. Oh that we may be
  94.  all awakened by them! They answer the question, Are there few
  95.  that shall be saved? But let none despond either as to
  96.  themselves or others, for there are last who shall be first, and
  97.  first who shall be last. If we reach heaven, we shall meet many
  98.  there whom we little thought to meet, and miss many whom we
  99.  expected to find.
